Lindley, who joined the full band about one-third of the way into that set, served as something of a wild card. Midway through, it was hard not to notice how much of this set had the same tempo and feel - a sense of tasteful craftsmanship.

While this brings a certain consistency to his music, it also occasionally edges on monotony. The man who wrote “Off to Wonderland,” the opening number from this night’s electric set, may be more mature and somewhat world-weary, but the melancholy romanticism of that song is equally in evidence in earlier tunes such as “Rock Me on the Water” and the aforementioned “Dancer.” The changes in his style have taken place only around the edges - the slicker ’80s guitar sound on “Bright Baby Blues,” the pounding piano and operatic drive that pushed “Running on Empty” into Springsteen territory. Yet all along he has never had a moment where he veered off into unexpected musical terrain in retrospect, he arrived on the scene a fully formed musician. While he has expanded his lyrical outlook - moving from the personal ballads of his seminal early ’70s albums to the more political material of his ’80s work - he’s tried, throughout the last 15 years or so, to knit those two strands together, as in his thoughtful eco-ballad “Looking East” (which he introduced with a long, somewhat rambling talk about the ocean), then backed those thoughts up with action. He can get away with this because unlike, say, Leonard Cohen or Neil Young, Browne, now 61, has been remarkably steady in his approach. Browne seemed determined to prove he can still cut it as a songwriter, opening this show with three songs from his most recent studio effort, 2008’s Time the Conqueror - then waiting until almost halfway into his 100-minute set before dusting off “Doctor My Eyes,” a song even casual fans could recognize. Browne’s voice and laid-back charisma, meanwhile, have held up along with his looks.Īnd to their credit, they did not coast on nostalgia. Lindley remains a whiz on just about any stringed instrument, including various lap steel and slide guitars, as well as fiddle (on the lovely “For a Dancer”) and the saz (a Turkish guitar that turned his solo on “Soul of a Man” into a stunning Middle Eastern blues). Lindley, on the other hand, is an altogether shaggier presence, with bushy sideburns and his gray hair brushed back, wearing a mismatched ‘70s polyester shirt and pants that, according to Browne, broke the band’s loose dress code.īut they meshed perfectly when they performed.

Plus, he still has a serious head of hair - not many guys in their 60s can pull off a Veronica Lake fall over their eye. Browne, still lean and handsome, epitomizes California cool and has weathered the years better than most of his contemporaries he’s proof of what a good set of cheekbones can accomplish. Here, they performed a short set as an acoustic duo before returning to the stage accompanied by Browne’s regular (and very fine) touring band. It’s something of a reunion, since the Hall of Famer has been joined by longtime collaborator David Lindley, following up on their Latin-tinged collaboration Love Is Strange: En Vivo con Tino, abetted by Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo and released in May on Browne’s own Inside Recordings label. Jackson Browne has taken a similar tack in his current outing, which stopped Friday night at the Greek Theatre.
